International Symposium on Biodiversity and COP10
Poverty Reduction and Biodiversity in Developing Countries
- What Roles Should NGOs Play?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Many people in developing countries directly depend upon the ecosystem for their daily lives. It is imperative for biodiversity conservation that local people take initiative in sustainable community development.
However, The "2010 Target" to "significantly reduce the current rate of biodiversity loss by 2010" went unachieved. This has resulted in a vicious circle in which biodiversity loss exacerbates poverty and poverty leads to further destruction of biodiversity.
What is needed to reduce poverty and protect biodiversity in developing countries? What are the roles of NGOs and civil society? These issues will be considered by participants of this symposium including government representatives, researchers, NGOs and overseas guests involved in sustainable community development in Southeast Asia.
