Founded in 1987 by visionary NGO leaders, JANIC has spent decades strengthening Japan’s civil society. As a multi-award-winning organization, we have become a premier platform bridging local expertise with global social movements.
| Oct. 1987 | Established as the “Japanese NGO Center for International Cooperation (JANIC)” as a voluntary organization. |
| Apr. 1988 | Published the first edition of the “NGO Directory.” |
| Apr. 1996 | Launched the “NGO-MOFA Regular Consultation Meetings” with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. |
| Oct. 1998 | Launched the “NGO-JICA Consultation Meetings” with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). |
| Mar. 2001 | Obtained NPO corporate status; changed the Japanese organization name to “Kokusai Kyoryoku NGO Center.” |
| Sep. 2004 | Established the “NGO-Labor Union International Collaboration Forum.” |
| Dec. 2008 | Launched the “Accountability Self-Check (ASC)” system (revised in 2012 and 2021). |
| Jul. 2009 | Received the Foreign Minister’s Commendation. |
| Mar. 2011 | Commenced relief activities following the Great East Japan Earthquake. |
| Jul. 2015 | Established the “Japan Quality and Accountability Network (JQAN).” |
| Apr. 2016 | Signed the United Nations Global Compact. |
| Sep. 2018 | Received the JICA President’s Award. |
| Feb. 2019 | Launched HAPIC (Humanitarian and Peacebuilding International Conference). |
| Aug. 2020 | Received the 10th Okinawa Peace Prize. |
| Apr. 2022 | Established the policy think tank “THINK Lobby.” |
| May 2022 | Established the “Civil Society Coalition for G7 2023.” |
