Global Week of Action: People Rising for Justice and Liberation (12-18 Oct 2026, Bangkok, Thailand)

In a few weeks, from October 12 to 18, the IMF and the World Bank will be holding their Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.  This will be an auspicious time to raise the political, economic, and financial challenges people and communities worldwide face today, highlight the impacts and implications of the IMF’s and the World Bank’s roles and policies, and put forward people’s demands and alternatives.

 

In this regard, an international coordination process was started, now involving more than 120 national, regional and global organizations and networks, to promote synergy and collaboration.   We have agreed to hold a Global Week of Action with the theme: People Rising for Justice and Liberation! from October 12 to 18.

 

Aside from common initiatives for popular education, media and communications, and thematic activities, the two biggest joint activities agreed were:

 

-Convening an International Peoples Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand on October 12 and 13

-Organizing coordinated online and offline actions and mobilizations in Bangkok and globally in different countries on October 16

 

The International Peoples Assembly, October 12 and 13 

“From Debt and Dominance to Justice and Liberation”

 

The International Peoples Assembly will bring together peoples’ organizations, networks, movements, and NGOs from various regions of the Global South and Global North engaged in economic, financial, gender, and environmental/climate justice, human rights, and democratic governance.  It will be a vital opportunity to:

1) Forge a common and deeper understanding of the current global economic, financial, and geopolitical context and trends, and impacts and implications of the role and policies of the IMF and World Bank

2) Learn from campaigns, movements, and networks on various  issues – especially on the latest trends, developments, and challenges,  the intersectionality of issues, and the role of the IMF and World Bank

3) Promote counter narratives, critical perspectives, people’s demands and alternatives

4) Strengthen relationships and linkages across a broad community of movements and CSOs, and with Thai movements and organizations

 

The Program of the 2-day Assembly is still being developed, but below is the general structure agreed thus far:

First Day – October 12

3 – Green Industrial Policy; Critical Minerals/Rare Earth,  Mining and Extractivism

4 – Right to Food and Food Sovereignty

5 – Gender Justice and Women’s Rights

6 – Inequality

7 – Public Services

8 – War,  Militarization, Human Rights, Civic Space

9 – Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Struggles

10 – Labor and Migration

 

The Global Day of Action: October 16

People Rising for Justice and Liberation!

 

The Global Day of Action on October 16 will include mobilizations in Bangkok and various actions in other parts of the world, both offline and online.  The aim is to demonstrate worldwide solidarity across movements and deliver common messages to the IMF, the World Bank, and the governments assembled at the meeting.

These events would be most meaningful and successful with your active participation and contributions. We warmly invite you and your members to 

1) Participate in the International Peoples Assembly on October 12 and 13 and help lead the discussions and exchanges! This will be held at the Ambassador Hotel, in Bangkok.

2) Hold a self-organized activity during DAY 2 of the International Peoples Assembly (October 13) – There are 20 slots available, and each slot is for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Since slots are limited, please register as soon as possible. The deadline is September 18.
