The event also symbolizes the transition of the C20 presidency to South Africa, which will lead the G20 in 2025.

The C20 Summit takes place in the same week as the G20 Leaders’ Summit, also in Rio de Janeiro, aiming to influence discussions on pressing global issues, such as fighting hunger, gender equality, climate justice, reforming the financial architecture, and anti-racism initiatives. Over the year, ten thematic C20 working groups held meetings to set priorities and finalize the policy package, which will be presented to the Brazilian government.

The recommendations include measures such as taxing large fortunes, reforming the global financial system, eradicating poverty, achieving climate justice through energy transition, and implementing accountability mechanisms within the G20. Topics such as gender equality, anti-racism, disability rights, and human rights are integral to all recommendations.

The event has confirmed the attendance of significant representatives from various sectors, including Felipe Hees, Brazil’s Sous Sherpa for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Eliane Aquino, National Secretary of Citizenship Income; and Ariadne Ribeiro, representing UNAIDS, among others.

This year’s Brazilian edition of the C20 brings together over 2,500 participants representing 1,700 civil society organizations from 91 countries. The C20 presidency in Brazil is held by the Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (ABONG), led by Henrique Frota, while the role of sherpa is held by Alessandra Nilo, co-founder of Gestos – Soropositividade, Comunicação e Gênero, who is responsible for the group’s political articulation and advocacy with governments.

C20 Meeting with Lula

On November 11, at 3 pm, representatives of the C20 (Alessandra Nilo and Henrique Frota) and other G20 engagement groups have a scheduled meeting with President Lula at the Palácio do Planalto. The statement calls on G20 leaders, under Brazil’s presidency, to urgently support the country’s reconstruction, ensuring the security, health, and fundamental rights of Haitians, especially women and girls, who face disproportionate impacts. Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicates critical levels of food insecurity and forced displacement, with thousands in urgent need of protection.

Organizations from various countries—including Argentina, Germany, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United States, France, Chile, and Brazil—and public figures such as former player and activist Raí and actor Bruno Garcia have shown their support for this petition, which will be presented to G20 leaders under Brazil’s presidency.

Press Service

Civil Society 20 Summit

Date: November 13, 2024
Time: 9 am to 6 pm | Doors open at 8 am for press accreditation
Venue: Novotel Rio de Janeiro Porto Atlântico, Avenida Professor Pereira Reis, 49

The C20 Summit is live-streamed on 13 November 2024.

Portuguese – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlGpgjHmdTM
English – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpFZ_ImKmF8
Spanish – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGPS99VMHjY

Program for the C20 Summit – https://c20brasil.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Programacao-Summit_-dia-13.pdf

The C20 Policy Pack 2024 – https://c20brasil.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/C20-Policy-Pack-2024_Digital.pdf

*This article is originally published at the C20 website on 10 November 2024.
