 5th December, 2019
Japan NGO Center for International Cooperation (JANIC)

On 4th December, Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, the head of Peace Japan Medical Services, known as Peshawar-kai in Japanese, in Afghanistan has passed away in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. He was shot while driving to work alongside his bodyguards and driver who were also killed in the attack. We, Japan NGO Center for International Cooperation (JANIC) express our deepest condolences to the victims and their families. We also condemn in the strongest terms the attack on civilians engaged in the humanitarian assistance.

Dr. Nakamura started offering medical supports to the people and refugees in Pakistan in 1984 and Afghanistan in 1989. From 2000, he had been offering reconstruction aid through building canals and providing water supply to millions of people. He was always with those suffering from poverty and conflicts. His work had helped the lives of many and gave them hopes.

We praise Dr. Nakamura for his tremendous work. At the same time, we push ourselves forward to improve the working environment of CSOs in order for them to safely provide aids to those living in difficult conditions and to build society where people of diverse backgrounds can live together safely and peacefully.
